Job Purpose/Overview

The combination of rapid technology innovation, changes in consumer and professional preferences & behaviors that would have been unthinkable a mere decade ago, and the power and importance of data, have become disruptive forces in the Veterinary diagnostics business.

This role will play a part in contributing to software as a service and web applications to support the R&D initiatives for Mars. Using Javascript frameworks, this role will provide user interfaces for our clients and internal users to connect with Mars data and services, created in object-oriented languages and connected through REST.

This role will work to discover issues and create new solutions for them. To find these problems the role partners across the global science and diagnostics R&D function at Mars. It then ideates approaches and leads transversal delivery while utilizing agile, design oriented, methods.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the team’s ownership of the backend application.

  • Experience integrating services through REST design principles and relational database (SQL) for production ready environments.

  • Maintaining repositories and version control, with the ability to initiate and contribute to code reviews.

  • Developing new user-facing features with attention to detail.

  • Help build coding practices and standards within the team.

  • Participate in standard Agile methodologies (standups, retrospectives, task management).

  • Collaborate remotely cross-functionally with business users, project managers and other engineers to achieve elegant solutions.

  • The ability to deliver features with minimal supervision or collaboration from team members.

  • Provide recommendations for continuous improvement.

Context & Scope

  • Works with the team to conceptualize solutions based on feature requests from stakeholders and product owners.

  • To research new patterns and frameworks to expand their expertise and practice sharing these new tools with fellow developers.

  • Builds a network of expertise and capability extending inside Mars and beyond to startups, thought leaders, academia, etc.

  • Plays a critical role in iterative, agile projects that rapidly prove or disprove hypotheses and lead to value for Mars.

  • Continually learns and improves own skill set, and then brings that knowledge into Mars, both upskilling other associates and finding ways to convert this knowledge into business value.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business or IT discipline e.g. computer science, engineering, statistics, physics.

  • Minimum of 2-5 years’ experience working with web technologies and object-oriented languages.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in React, Node.js and Golang is preferred.

  • Experience in writing unit tests according to acceptance criteria of features.

  • Experience using Docker for local development and deployments.

  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.

Working Conditions

The associate is regularly required to apply manual dexterity, including hand/wrist flexibility, for computer keyboarding. The associate frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The associate is frequently required to hear and speak in order to use the telephone, make presentations and communicate with people in an office environment. The associate is occasionally required to sit and stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

The associate will primarily work in a typical office environment including use of cubicles, computers and overhead lighting. Temperature extremes will be minimal to nonexistent. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The associate will be required to use a computer, spreadsheets, data base management, email, and the Internet. The associate is frequently required to use a calculator; fax, copy machine, and phone system. The associate must occasionally use media equipment such as an overhead projector, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams.

The Target Pay Range for this position is $107,800 - $125,000 annually. At Mars, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.
